It appears the Washington Redskins are on the cusp of changing their name. The team formally known as the Washington Redskins sent out this press release this morning:
By saying they will be “undergo a thorough review of the team’s name,” they are actually saying they will finally change the team’s name.
It’s definitely going to happen. You do not issue a press release such as this unless you’ve already decided the name has got to go. I think the Redskins are just trying to give the illusion that this is not a spur of the moment decision.
I think it’s definitely a spur of the moment decision.
FedEx and Nike no longer approve of the Redskins name
FedEx announced they no longer want their name associated with the team’s home stadium. This is big considering the money FedEx is paying team owner Daniel Snyder for the stadium’s naming rights. Under the revenue sharing scheme enjoyed by the NFL, Snyder does not share naming rights money with the other owners. Additionally, it’s not like Synder will ever be able to find another corporate sponsor to pay him for the naming rights to the stadium. By FedEx doing what it did, it made the name too toxic for every other corporation to buy the stadium naming rights to.
Also, Nike pulled all of the Washington Redskins gear from their website. Nike is a superpower in the world of sports. They make the uniforms for all the teams in the NFL. Nike pulling Redskins gear from their website was a warning shot across the bow. How long until we see Nike claiming the name is so racist, child laborers in Honduras cannot make the jerseys anymore?
I never thought the name was a problem
To be completely honest, I’ve never felt the name was a racist slur against Native Americans. It doesn’t matter what I think. If indigenous people think it’s disrespectful, then why not change the name? What harm does it really cause? Teams change names all the time. The Bullets changed their name to the Wizards. The high school I graduated from in California announced it would no longer be called the Quartz Hill Rebels.
That actually made me sad. Life moves on though. If we are lucky, we get to move along with it.
