Peter Capaldi is the next Doctor

The new title character for Doctor Who was announced Sunday on live TV. His name is Peter Capaldi, he’s 55 years old, and he’s from Scotland.

I think it’s a good choice. It could have been a lot worse. I’m not sure I liked how the doctor was getting younger and younger with each regeneration. If they kept this going, before too long, the Doctor was going to be played by a teenager, or worse, Justin Bieber.

Capaldi will debut as the Doctor in this year’s Christmas Special. It won’t be his first episode of Doctor Who. He played Lucius Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii from the fourth season. He’s not the first actor from Doctor Who to do double-duty, in fact, he’s not the first actor even from The Fires of Pompeii to play two roles. Karen Gillan, who played Amy Pond, one of the greatest companions in Doctor Who history, also appeared in the same episode, as a Soothsayer.

Capaldi is a life-long Doctor Who fan. He once wrote a letter when a was 15 years old to The Radio Times complimenting them on their coverage of the 15th university of Doctor Who. That’s hard-core, Doctor Who nerd behavior. Now he’s going to be the Doctor.

That’s pretty awesome.
