Going to Otakon alongside COVID-19 anti-vaxxers is dumb

Otakon, the annual convention dedicated to celebrating Asian pop culture, is this weekend, August 6 – 8, in Washington D.C.

Organizers aren’t allowing a little thing like a deadly, highly contagious virus to get in the way. Asian culture isn’t going to celebrate itself damn it! Masks will be “required,” and a “no contact, real-time, multi-person thermal scanner” will read everyone’s temperature.

Otakon organizers could ask attendees to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination before they’re allowed inside. That seems to be the safest way to have a convention during a global pandemic. Then again, that would require effort. It would also decrease the number of people attending. COVID-19 anti-vaxxers wouldn’t be able to attend and enjoy Otakon 2021.

We can’t do that. God forbid we do anything to inconvenience or offend COVID-19 anti-vaxxers.

The number of COVID-19 infections is increasing because too many of our fellow citizens refuse to get a free vaccine for COVID-19. These COVID-19 anti-vaxxers are the same people who refused to wear masks when it was required.

I haven’t been to Otakon since it moved from Baltimore to Washington D.C. I’d like to go, but not if they’re allowing unvaccinated people to attend. That seems like an unnecessary risk just to celebrate Asian pop culture.
