Last night’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees had to be postponed. According to ESPN, six Yankees players tested positive for COVID-19. One of the infected players is Aaron Judge. Supposedly.
When a player tests positive for COVID-19, Major League Baseball will not announce who it is. I think that’s stupid. How are people supposed to know if they need to get tested if they don’t know who exactly is infected? For example, say you are the waitress who served breakfast to Aaron Judge the morning of the All-Star Game? You will not know if you were exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus or not. I guess people are just expected to get tested every day.
The reason MLB or teams don’t announce who exactly tested positive for COVID-19 is that they are adhering to outdated HIPAA regulations. Essentially, HIPAA requires medical information about an individual to be kept private. An individual can release their own medical information. A health care professional or an organization cannot. HIPAA doesn’t make sense during a global pandemic.
If Aaron Judge could not play because of a sore hamstring, the Yankees must announce it. On the other hand, if Aaron Judge cannot play because he’s shedding the SARS-CoV-2 virus with every breath he takes, mums the word.
What’s going currently on with the New York Yankees reveals the COVID-19 pandemic is not over. Even though we have vaccines, a lot of people refuse to take them. At the same time, masks and social distancing are no longer required in indoor public places. Worse, the Delta variant of the SARS-Cov-2 is now the dominant strain of the virus in the United States.
The Delta variant is much more contagious than the original Alpha variant. So, by all means, let’s open restaurants, bars, and movie theaters. Let’s do away with mask mandates and social distancing. Let the good times roll. What’s the worst that can happen?
It’s only a matter of time until a fully vaccinated person dies from COVID-19. That’s assuming it hasn’t happened already. I doubt it would be publicized when it happens. Fully vaccinated people are getting COVID-19 and need to go to the hospital. In the UK, eight percent of the people needing hospitalization for COVID-19 are fully vaccinated. What if these people refused to go to the hospital?
I assume at least some of them would have died if they were not hospitalized. Normally when a person is admitted to the hospital with a deadly disease, the goal is to keep them from dying.
