You’ve probably heard the Boston Red Sox traded Mookie Betts and David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox wanted to trade Betts because he had a year remaining on his contract. He made it clear he is planning on becoming a free-agent. He wants to test the market.
The Dodgers acquired Price because the Red Sox insisted on making it a package deal. They wanted to shed Price’s contract from their books, at least some of it.
On its face, this trade seems like a great move for the Dodgers. Mookie Betts is one of the best players in the game. In 2018 Betts was able to achieve something Derek Jeter was never able to do: Betts won the American League Most Valuable Player award.
How can obtaining the baseball services of Mookie Betts be a problem?
Major League Baseball is still conducting its investigation into allegations the Red Sox were using technology to steal signs during the 2018 season and postseason, including the World Series.
If you remember, the Red Sox beat the Dodgers in the 2018 World Series.
What if Major League Baseball releases its report and it shows the Red Sox cheated in the 2018 World Series? The Dodgers and their massive fanbase are already living with the fact the Houston Astros cheated them out of the 2017 World Series. If it turns out the Red Sox did the same thing a year later, it will create a massive problem, both in the clubhouse and with the fans.
I actually hope the Red Sox didn’t cheat. Having one team in baseball that cheated its way into a championship is one team too many. If the Red Sox cheated in 2018, it’s something I don’t think they continued in 2019. In 2018 they won 108 games. In 2019 they won only 84 games. If the Red Sox were cheating last year, they certainly weren’t very good at it.
I never thought I’d say this, but I’m rooting for the Boston Red Sox. I hope they won the 2018 World Series fairly.
