Just when I thought Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s inept leadership concerning the COVID-19 pandemic could not get any worse, the man has found a new way to sink even lower. Even though the number of COVID-19 cases in Maryland is increasing on a daily basis, Hogan wants to work on reopening the state.
From Hagerstown’s paper of record, The Herald-Mail:
Hogan said while the state is seeing lower numbers of coronavirus cases and deaths compared to some earlier projections for the state, he said they are still on the increase and he urged residents to continue to stay at home as much as possible and avoid crowds.
Hogan said he and other officials are expected to discuss next week a plan to reopen the state.
He emphasized that any plan will be “well thought out, gradual and safe.”
Now is not the time to even think about reopening Maryland. Just because the number of coronavirus cases and deaths is lower than “some” of the earlier projections only means some of the projections are wrong. Projections are meaningless. What matters are the actual numbers, not projected numbers. When you look at the actual numbers, you should know now is not the time to even think about reopening the state.
What the actual numbers show
Here is today’s chart from the Maryland Department of Health website:
The number of confirmed cases in Maryland is increasing each and every single day. Hogan ordered “nonessential” businesses to close and people to stay at home on March 23. Confirmed cases of COVID-19 have only increased since then. The number of confirmed cases will skyrocket if Hogan gets his way.
A competent leader would look at the steady rise in confirmed cases of COVID-19 and place even more stringent restrictions in place. For example, close fast-food restaurants, home improvement stores, car dealerships, and put a stop on construction projects. Order even more people to stay at home. If this is what it looks like with six-foot social distancing, increase it to ten feet.
Instead of doing any of that, Hogan is talking about easing up on restrictions. It sends the wrong message. Marylanders need to be more vigilant against the coronavirus, not less. I think when Larry Hogan issued the shutdown order, he expected a lot more Marylanders were going to die. He ordered 15,000 body bags. He leased Maryland ice rinks to use as makeshift morgues.
As of this morning, 349 Marylanders have died due to COVID-19. I don’t think Hogan would have shut down the state and enacted restrictions if he knew the Maryland death count was going to be that low. Not that I think the death count is low. I think Hogan does.
Larry Hogan was expecting to fill ice rinks with dead Marylanders. Does he think anything less than that is a win? It sure seems like it.
