From The Washington Post:
President Biden greeted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with a fist bump Friday as he arrived here for a controversial meeting with the Saudi leader, prompting immediate denunciations from human rights advocates who suggested it projected acceptance and even closeness with the crown prince.
Joe Biden bumping fists with Mohammed bin Salman like they’re good buddies. The problem is, they’re not buddies. Candidate Joe Biden made a promise running up to the 2020 election that he would make Mohammed bin Salman a “pariah” for ordering the 2018 assassination of The Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in a Saudi consulate in Turkey.
One does not bump fists with a pariah.
The Washington Post rightfully criticised the exchange:
The fist bump between President Biden and Mohammed bin Salman was worse than a handshake – it was shameful. It projected a level of intimacy and comfort that delivers to MBS the unwarranted redemption he has been desperately seeking.
In 2020, I voted for Joe Biden. I did it because he wasn’t Donald Trump. I don’t know who I will vote for in 2024, but it won’t be for Joe Biden. My patience has worn thin with him.
