Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military to invade the Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Since then, the world has reacted by implementing a series of crippling financial sanctions against Russia.
Western companies such as BP and Shell are pulling out of Russia. Germany froze the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea gas pipeline project. It would have sent natural gas directly from Russia to Germany. Russian banks are being removed from the SWIFT banking system. SWIFT is a messaging service connecting financial institutions around the world. Without it, banks will have a difficult time transferring funds.
These are just some of the economic hardships getting leveled against Russia. More get added daily.
The stated goal of these sanctions is to force Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine. Sure, but how will that happen? Will Putin wake up one morning and realize what a stupid blunder it was to invade Ukraine, and order his forces to leave?
I highly doubt it. I think the reason behind these sanctions is to motivate someone to put a bullet in the back of Vladimir Putin’s head.
I think that’s a lot more likely to happen than for Putin to cave in to the financial pressure being put on Russia. Frankly, I’m shocked he’s not dead already. Once Putin is dead, the world can go back to normal. Without Putin, the invasion in Ukraine ends and the sanctions levied against Russia come to a stop.
