With COVID-19 raking havoc upon the country, infecting more and more people, I’m shocked we are still identifying some businesses as essential when in fact they are not. For example, fast-food restaurants.
Fast food restaurants are not in any way shape or form essential. They’re just not. Why aren’t underprivileged people allowed to use their SNAP or WIC benefits at McDonald’s, Burger King, or Taco Bell if such places are so essential?
This false designation allows these businesses to continue to operate during the pandemic when others are not. They are pandemic profiteering. Worse, allowing these businesses to profit during a pandemic endangers the lives of the people working fast-food. If you think fast-food workers can keep the recommended 6-feet distance from other humans, you’ve never worked fast-food. If one worker comes down with COVID-19, you can assume everyone working with them will get infected too.
When COVID-19 infects fast-food workers, it means they will be exhaling their hot, infected breath on food that customers will be eating. Do you want to eat a Big Mac with a dash of COVID-19? I do not. I’m not eating anything that’s been touched or breathed on by another human. To do otherwise seems far too risky and completely unnecessary.
Allowing fast-food restaurants to operate during this pandemic is wrong and it needs to stop.
