Al Franken points out we are entitled to our own opinions, but we are not entitled to our own facts

Senator John Thune, Republican from South Dakota, spoke on the Senate floor Monday and said that the benefits of the proposed health care bill don’t kick in till 2014. I’m told he even had a chart. Senator Al Franken, Democrat from Minnesota, openly challenged that assertion saying that it was not true.

Franken went on to say that though we are entitled to our own opinions, we are not entitled to our own facts.

If you were a listener on Franken’s former radio show on Air America, you probably remember the phrase. Franken also pointed out that many of his Republican colleagues have not read the bill and that if they want to debate the bill, they really need to read the bill.

Why Creigh Deeds lost

creighdeeds2A lot of the so-called experts are theorizing why Creigh Deeds, the Democrat nominee for Virginia governor, lost to the Republican candidate Bob McDonnell on Tuesday’s off-year election. Now I’m not an expert and I don’t live in Virginia, but I’m not going to let any of that stop me from weighing in on the topic.

Creigh Deeds lost because he is Creigh Deeds.

Living in Maryland, I get to not only see lots of campaign ads for candidates here in Maryland, but I’m able to see all the ads for candidates in West Virgina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia too. I cannot begin to count how many ads I’ve seen on TV for both Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell. By election day, I was fed up with seeing both candidates for Virginia. If I was a voter in Virginia, I wouldn’t have voted for either candidate.

I would have stayed home on election day.

I’m tired of voting for candidates that I just don’t like. I’ve been forced to do this because the Democrats put awful candidates on the ballot. I told myself after having to vote for John Kerry and John Edwards in 2004 that I would never vote for someone I didn’t like ever again.

I don’t like Creigh Deeds. He’s against gay marriage. He thinks juveniles should be eligible for the death penalty.  He voted to make English the official language.  He’s against the public option, and he said that if he was governor of Virginia, he would consider “opting out” of any public option health insurance plan.

With Democrats like Creigh Deeds, who needs Republicans?

I think history has shown that when voters are given the choice between a Republican and a Republican Lite, more times than not, they will choose the actual Republican.  If a voter is against gay marriage, pro-death penalty, thinks people should only speak English, and is against health care reform, they are probably a Republican.

Rush Limbaugh will not be an NFL owner

rush_limbaugh_350_31Right wing conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been dropped from the group of investors that want to purchase the St. Louis Rams.  Evidently this is some kind of victory for civil rights activists because some of them balked at the idea of someone like Rush Limbaugh, who’s made several racially insensitive comments over the years on his popular radio show, owning a football team.

The difference with Limbaugh and every other rich white guy in his late 50’s is that Limbaugh says what he says in public.

Even though I’m a tree hugging liberal, I’ve always admired Rush Limbaugh.  Not because I agree with his politics, because I don’t, but because he’s very good at what he does.  If you are a fan of talk radio, you cannot help but notice that he is the best at what he does.  There are many other right wing radio talk show hosts on the air, but none are as good at what they do as Limbaugh.

Does Limbaugh say some outrageous stuff that borders on racism?  Perhaps, but that’s his job.  He’s a conservative talk radio host that talks for a living.  He has a massive audience and he knows what they want to hear.  Is he a racist?  Maybe, but why would a racist want to own a team that plays in a league where most of the players are black?  If Limbaugh is a racist, maybe the thing he needs to do is to interact with more black people, something he would easily be able to do if he was a part owner of an NFL team.

Who knew the Appalachian Trail went all the way down to Argentina?

Republican South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is no longer AWOL. He was spotted in Atlanta coming off a plane from Argentina where it turns out he had been visiting his mistress. He spoke at a press conference yesterday where he apologized to his wife and children for his indiscretion.

At least he didn’t drag his wife to the press conference. I hate when politicians do that.

It was originally believed that Sanford was off hiking the Appalachian Trail because that is where he told his staff he was going. To hike the Appalachian Trail like some kind of godless, unwashed hippie. Instead, he flew down to Buenos Aires to spend seven days with his mistress.

Evidently Governor Sanford’s wife Jenny Sanford kicked him out of their home two weeks ago. Good for her.

When Mark Sanford was a U.S. Congressman, he voted to impeach President Clinton for having an extramarital affair with Monica Lewinsky.  There’s no word yet if he plans on resigning as South Carolina governor.  My guess is that he will have to.
