Sunday is not the Sabbath

From the Huffington Post:

Glenn Beck and Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) expressed harmonized outrage on Beck’s radio program Thursday about news that the House might vote on the health care reform package this Sunday. Voting on a Sunday, they said, was offensive and heretical.

“They intend to vote on the Sabbath, during Lent, to take away the liberty that we have right from God,” King said.

“Faith has been perverted,” Beck responded, then repeated. “They are going to vote for this damn thing on a Sunday, which is the Sabbath, during Lent.”

Sunday is not the Sabbath and it never has been. The Sabbath is the last day of the week which is Saturday. It goes all the way back literally to the dawn of time when God created the Heavens and the Earth. He put in a solid six days of hard work making all sorts of stuff and decided to take a day off to rest.

Can anyone blame him?

In Beck’s defense, he’s a Mormon and Sunday very well may be the Mormon Sabbath, but I don’t think so. Nearly everything I know about Mormonism I’ve learned from watching Big Love. Not only is it a very entertaining cable TV show, it’s also quite informative about the Mormon faith.

The Herald-Mail runs ad for Glenn Beck group in the Opinion pages

The following letter ran in The Herald-Mail on the Opinion page on Friday, January 29:

The “We Surround Them” group in Frederick, Md., is sponsoring a constitutional education seminar titled “The Principles of Liberty.”

In this seminar, you will learn the fundamental principles of liberty in the tradition of the Founding Fathers and their “Freedom Formula” for freedom, prosperity and peace. You also will learn where the Founding Fathers got their ideas for sound government and how a return to these ideas can solve our nation’s problems today.

Upon completion of the seminar, you will have a great understanding of how far our federal government has strayed from the original intent of the Founding Fathers. I urge everyone to attend.

The seminar will be held Saturday, March 6, at the Holiday Inn at the FSK Mall in Frederick. The cost is $15 per person.

The We Surround Them group is the brainchild of conservative radio and Fox News host Glenn Beck. It is an anti-federal government, “me-first” organization that’s based on the belief that Glenn Beck and the people who think like him are not the fringe minority that most people believe they are, but instead are a massive majority that surrounds everyone else.

It’s Glenn Beck’s organization, but no where in the “opinion” letter to the The Herald-Mail is that fact mentioned. The Opinion pages of any newspaper should be a place for readers to share their opinion with their fellow readers. It shouldn’t be a place for divisive political groups to get free advertising.

And no, I will not be attending.

Microsoft wants to make Bing the official search engine of teabaggers and birthers everywhere

166px-Bing_logo.svgMicrosoft is in talks with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation to de-index every News Corp owned entity from Google and allow Bing, the new search engine owned by Microsoft, to become the only search engine for News Corp properties. This would mean that if you wanted to search for something on Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, or the New York Post, you would have to go to Bing, not Google.  The same would apply to 20th Century Fox, Fox, Fox Sports, FX Networks, and a host of other entertainment and sports networks.

According to the Financial Times, News Corp isn’t the only media company approached by Microsoft to make Bing the exclusive search engine.

I cannot help but believe that this is a really stupid idea.  Not just for News Corp, but for Microsoft too.  A deal like this wouldn’t stop anyone from using Google to find News Corp related content.  For instance, say Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck say something incredibly stupid on Fox News.  If went to Google and performed a search of what they said, you might not find anything that directly links to Fox News, but you would still find a plethora of web content related to whatever Hannity or Beck said.  Microsoft may pay News Corp money to de-link from Google, but that’s not going to stop bloggers and others from linking to News Corp entities.

These bloggers and others would simply move to the top of the Google search results.

A move like this would also hurt Bing’s credibility.  I’m not sure being the official search engine of Fox News is anything to be proud of.

Glenn Beck’s new book

glenn.beck.soviet.uniformI received an email this morning from Borders informing me that I need to redeem my $5.00 in Borders Bucks before the end of the month or I’m going to lose them. Contained in the email was a list of some of the new books coming out this week. One of the books caught my attention, but how could it not? It featured a photo of Fox News host and conservative talk radio host Glenn Beck decked out in a uniform from the old Soviet Union. The book is entitled, Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government.

The book claims to teach people how to talk obnoxious idiot liberals when they say that guns are evil or that the rich don’t pay enough taxes.

Didn’t Ann Coulter already write this book?

I’m not really sure why Beck is wearing a Soviet military uniform or why he has such a dumb smirk on his face.  Why is he sticking his bottom lip out?  I know that when Ann Coulter first wrote this book, she didn’t don a military uniform.  I’m guessing that the implication by Beck is that if you are a liberal, you are somehow just like a Soviet era communist.  I’m guessing that it’s the same logic that states since President Obama wants every American to have access to affordable, quality health care, he is just like Adolf Hitler.

How ironic is it that the first time Glenn Beck wears a military uniform, it’s from the old Soviet Union?

Glenn Beck talks to a psychiatrist

Fox News rising star Glenn Beck took time on his program to write down some of the names bloggers and others of similar ill repute have called him just this week. He then talked to a psychiatrist about it.

The psychiatrist made a real uncomfortable analogy about a drug addict being confronted about their drug use, evidently not knowing that Glenn Beck is a former drug addict. It’s like he is talking about “those people” not knowing that one of “those people” is sitting directly across from him. Beck then tells the psychiatrist that he is a “recovering alcoholic”, but he doesn’t mention the fact that he is also a recovering drug addict.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but isn’t Glenn Beck in trouble right now with some people because he called President Obama a name, that name being a racist?

It seems somewhat hypocritical of Glenn Beck to be now whining and moaning about people calling him names when it’s obvious he is more than willing to engage in name calling himself. In fact, he even complained about being called a racist.

The economic Apocalypse is upon us

The House of Representatives failed to pass the Wall Street bailout plan. The vote came in at 205 for it and 228 against it. About two thirds of the Democrats voted for it, while about only one third of Republicans voted for it.

The bill failed to pass because of the Republicans.

My elected Representative, Roscoe Bartlett (R) voted against it. What business he has weighing in on anything to do with the finances of this country is a mystery to me. He can’t even keep his own real estate deals straight. He’s really no different then most of Congress. Very few of our elected representatives have enough knowledge to make informed decisions about the economy. Most of them are lawyers by profession.

The stock market responded to the news of the bailout bill not passing with the Dow Jones industrial average losing 778 points. According to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, that’s some sort of record. According to CNN’s Glenn Beck, we are heading for another Great Depression. He’s not an economist. In fact, he didn’t even go to college. His background comes from being a former top-40 radio DJ.

Just the guy I want to hear from when watching CNN.

I have no idea what all this will mean. The problem is, nobody else knows either. The same people that are saying something must be done to bail out Wall Street were saying only a few months ago that the economy is strong.   John McCain was saying only a few weeks ago.
