Senate candidate Richard Mourdock says pregnancies from rape are part of God's plan

Last night Richard Mourdock, Indiana Republican Senate candidate said in a debate in front of actual people and on television that when a woman is raped and she becomes pregnant, it’s God’s plan.

So there you go, problem solved. We no longer have to pretend to make abortion a political issue. Rape and the resulting pregnancy is God’s plan. Got it.

Can’t you say the same thing about every other medical problem? Breast cancer? That’s God’s plan. It’s better not to interfere by getting treatment. Just let what’s going to happen, happen.

Personally, I think Mourdock is an idiot. It’s bad enough to actually think things like this, it’s much worse to say them aloud and in public. Considering that he’s backed by the Tea-Party, I guess it should be no surprise that he thinks and says really stupid things.

I agree that the statement that “rape is part of God’s plan” is pretty stupid, but correlating pregnancy to breast cancer is incorrect. A pregnancy is not a medical disease whereas any cancer in the body is. With that being said, a pregnancy can certainly require medical intervention such as an ectopic, molar, or missed spontaneous abortion. Those type of pregnancies can put the mothers life at risk if undealt with. A pregnancy that resulted from a criminal act such as rape is heinous but not a disease process.

    • But God allows both to happen to a woman, to get pregnant from a rape or to get breast cancer, no? I thought Mourdock’s point was that God planned on a woman to get raped and pregnant, so nothing should be done to interfere with that plan. The same applies to breast cancer.

Both are awful things that God allows to happen. To say a woman should only be allowed to deal with one and not the other seems ridiculous.

    • Let us not forget that God gives us cavities as well.
