Real Madrid has paid a world-record 100 million euros ($132 million) to Tottenham Hotspur FC for the football services of forward Gareth Bale. Madrid then signed the Welsh footballer to a six-year contract worth 200,378 euros ($264,856) a week after tax.
Does this mean Spain has finally turned its economy around? If so, good for them.
Rumor was it that Manchester United was chomping at the bit to pay even more for Bale, but that the Welshman had no interest in playing for United. Real Madrid was the only team Bale wanted to play for. Real Madrid was his favorite team as a kid. I’m no mathematician, but I’m guessing the now 24-year-old footballer was a fan of Real Madrid when it had David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane on the team.
Bale will now be teammates with Cristiano Ronaldo. It should be interesting to see how that works itself out. Bale is considered a dead ball specialist. Ronaldo is, well, Ronaldo. Who will take free kicks for Real? It should be fun to watch.
