The Queen as the Joker

A t-shirt featuring this awesome artwork can be had for a mere $20 over at Threadless. Some might say $20 bucks is kind of pricey for a t-shirt, but you can’t buy stuff like this at Target or Wal-Mart.

I have to think this t-shirt image is something Johnny Rotten would approve of.

Chandelier made from paperclips and cardboard drink carriers

egg-carton-chandelierCheck out this neat looking chandelier made with metal spring paperclips and those disposable pulpy cardboard things they give you at fast food joints to carry up to four cups at once.  I found it over at the Apartment Therapy Re-Nest blog.   They said it’s made with egg cartons, but to me it looks like the carriers they give out at Dunkin’ Donuts when you purchase more than one coffee.

I want to make one of these.  Maybe I’ll go out to Dunkin’ Donuts and purchase 24 cups of coffee to go.  I am kind of thirty right now.

I’m wondering how it’s illuminated.  Does it have one low-wattage bulb or is it using a string of tiny Christmas lights with the bulbs positioned at the openings?  I’m guessing it’s using Christmas lights.

Hang & Level

new_tool_imgThe Hang & Level is an ingenious tool for hanging pictures on the wall. It helps eliminate any mistakes or “practice” holes when putting nails in the wall.

I normally have to do complicated (at least for me) mathematical equations before hanging pictures and I hate it. I’ve put off hanging pictures here in the new apartment since seeing this tool on the Internet. The problem is, I haven’t been able to locate one. I looked at Home Depot and Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but couldn’t find one. I’m going to look at Lowes later today and if I still cannot find one, I’ll try to just buy one online.

A bulletin board made from a coffee sack

I saw this today while looking for something else. I thought it was a cool way to make a spiffy looking bulletin board.

How to nibble

Maker to Maker – Nibbler from make magazine on Vimeo.

I once installed a window on a PC so that I could see all of the various components. I also installed cold cathode lighting so everything could be easily seen. Other than allowing me to see precisely when it was time to clean out the dust bunnies, the window really had no value other than it looked pretty.

I don’t think I will ever bother installing a case window on a PC again, but if I do, I’m going to use a nibbler to cut out the section where the window goes. I used a jig saw the last time. Watching this video convinces me that the nibbler is the right tool for that job.

A Barbie doll that’s for ‘The Birds’

Dressed in a re-creation of the stylish green skirt-suit worn by the film’s ill-fated heroine in an iconic scene, Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” Barbie® Doll celebrates the 45th anniversary of the acclaimed film. From the doll’s classic ensemble to the perfectly painted expression to the accompanying black birds, every aspect captures the film’s infamous appeal.

LED circuit board Menorah

I’m not Jewish, but why should that stop me from celebrating the festival of lights? This snazzy Menorah is made from green circuit board material and each light is a light emitting diode (LED). You select which ones of the individual lights to light up by flipping it’s corresponding DIP switch to the “up” position.

The LED circuit board menorah can be purchased from Fred Flare for $25 (link via Boing Boing).

Concrete light bulb wall hook

Do you have some extra light bulbs and some Quikrete Mortar mix sitting around the house? If so, you might want to think about making one of these.  It’s a concrete light bulb wall hook.  Drive it into a wall stud and you will have a sturdy hook to hang a heavy coat from.  Plus, it will look extremely cool.

The creator posted step-by-step, easy to follow instructions over on Instructables.  He also posted a link to his website where you can purchase concrete light bulbs already made.  The price is $19 plus $6 shipping.

Girl gives herself Elf ears

I will no longer feel bad about getting myself tattooed when I was young and dumb. Well, more dumb then I am now. It’s clear to me that I could have done a lot worse. Here is a photo of a girl who had her ears surgically altered to make them pointed like the ears of an Elf. Or a Vulcan. After visiting her MySpace page, I’m guessing she was going for Elf and not Mr. Spock’s red-headed cousin.

And don’t think for a minute that an actual surgeon did this hack job.  No, a Body Modification “artist” did the deed.

If she wanted to be an Elf, couldn’t she just play World of Warcraft?  That’s what I did when I felt like being an Undead Priest.  I was not about to let some dork cut on me.

World’s tiniest snake

In this photo taken in 2006 and released on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, by U.S. scientist S. Blair Hedges, an evolutionary biologist at Penn State University, the globe’s tiniest snake is shown curled up on a U.S. quarter. Hedges said Sunday he has discovered the globe’s tiniest species of snake in the easternmost Caribbean island of Barbados, with full-grown adults typically less than four inches (10 centimeters) long. He named the diminutive snake “Leptotyphlops carlae” after his herpetologist wife, Carla Ann Hass.

So the guy that discovers this snake names it after his wife? Not his ex-wife, but to the woman he is currently married to? I would think the guy’s wife wouldn’t be too pleased that a certain type of snake was named after her.

Not only is this snake really small, it seems to be rather fond of money. Just what exactly is it doing to that quarter?

An essential tool for moving boxes

Sheri and I are planning on moving from our third-floor walk-up this coming February. Sometimes I think part of the reason we continue living here is because I am just too lazy to lug everything downstairs and into a moving truck.

This tool will make that task a lot easier. It is called a Strap-A-Handle and it’s available in two lengths, 6-foot and 8-foot.

The hardest part about carrying heavy loads is getting good hand placement.  It does not matter how strong you are if you can’t get a good handle on something.  This ‘handy’ tool helps to solve that.

Coil candle

Take my word for it.  When the zombie apocalypse comes, you are going to wish you had 80 hours of beeswax candle on hand.  This is a Coil Candle and it’s sold by Gaiam.  I’m not sure how it works exactly, but I think the burner contraption lowers onto the coil as it burns. It’s on sale for a mere $29.99.  They also sell beeswax refill coils for only $14.99.

You can expect those prices to drastically increase when the dead walk the earth looking for delicious brains to eat.

Pig shaped earbuds

Pink Pig EarbudsNot sure when these will make their way here to the United States — if ever — but Japanese company Greenhouse is releasing these wonderfully designed ear buds that make it look like you have a pig in your head.

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve been called pig-headed, I could easily pay the suggested retail price of around $12.

They also come in white and black, but I personally prefer the pink.

Cool looking fan made Space Mountain poster

Sheri and I are planning on heading back to California next month and one of the things we plan on doing is visiting Disneyland. One of my favorite rides out there is Space Mountain. I remember back in 1977 when it first opened, the first people to ride it for the first official ride were the surviving Mercury astronauts.

At the time that seemed very cool. Now it seems kind of sad.

Greg Maletic has created a very retro looking Space Mountain poster and made it available on his website. He also made it available for download on his website. There is a 4 x 6 inch PDF version long with a 36 x 54 inch PDF version.

$742 million for a full scale working Gundam

Takayuki Furuta has a dream.  He wants to help promote the field of robotics to children and he thinks the best way to do it is to built a full sized, fully working Gundam.  He has crunched the numbers and he thinks it will only cost a mere $742 million.  Go here to see the actual blueprints.

I don’t know about the kids, but the thought of seeing one of these bad boys walking down the street appeals to me.
