Will someone please tell Obama to stop bowing?

bow

What is it about President Obama that prompts him to bow to foreign dignitaries?  First he bowed to the king of Saudi Arabia, now he has bowed to the Japanese Emperor Akihito.  Does he just go around bowing to everyone he meets and we don’t see it because there isn’t a photographer around?

I don’t get it.

I bow to no one.  I never have and I never will.  Is it too much to ask that the guy living in the White House do the same?

He needs to knock it off and start practicing better posture.  It’s embarrassing enough that he’s a Chicago White Sox fan.  Is he trying to give TEA Baggers a photo to put on their protest signs?

In this latest case, perhaps he just wanted to be at eye level with the Emperor…

He does seem to do a bit too much humbling himself to other world leaders…

America is considered the mixing pot of the world. This is what makes us such a great nation. So, if you have a next door neighbor who is japanese-american would you want to respect him/her and their culture? Just something to think about… Or, could it be that some people think that respecting a culture is giving in to that culture and looking weak… Well, few words for you. Get the heck out of my great country! SPC. U.S. Army(Irish-American)

  4. Again, I can’t get on board the anti-bowing train. He bowed because his staff told him it was the proper thing to do. And his staff was right. Bowing doesn’t really mean anything in Japan. It’s comparable to smiling.

  5. @Jesse Jace: If bowing really doesn’t mean anything in Japan, why is only Obama doing it? Why isn’t Akihito returning the bow?

@Rick: Because according to the Japanese press the Emperor was surprised by it. He wasn’t expecting Obama to be so formal. he did appreciate it. Bowing in Japan is basic politeness.

The far right is ok with kissing and holding hands, but totally against bowing. Following the multiple failures of Bush’s antidiplomacy foreign policy, they would choose to make an issue out of a simple bow tells me just how out of touch with reality they truly are, and how desparate they are to bash President Obama over everything and anything.

  8. @Janace: Well, if it’s basic politeness, why didn’t he and his wife do the same? Are they not polite?

  9. @Wesley Mears: I’m not the far right. I’m not even on the right. I had a problem with Bush being so kissy feely with the king of Saudi Arabia, and I have a problem with this.
