Praying for Obama to die

psalm109-8It appears some conservative Christians have found a new low when it comes to demonstrating their displeasure in our elected president, Barack Obama. They are now turning to a little known Bible verse to vocalize just how much they don’t want Obama to be the President.

They are praying that he will die.

At least that is the implication of inciting Psalm 109:8 in relation to President Obama. The verse reads, “May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.” In case you don’t see the implication of this verse, the following verse, Psalm 109:9, reads, “May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.

To get better context, read the entire chapter.

It’s a shame that a perverse few can take a verse from Psalm and use it to sell hateful t-shirts, bumper stickers, and hats that imply that they want President Obama to die.  Psalm is a wonderful book of the Bible with many beautiful passages.  For generations, people have turned to Psalm during times of trouble or great loss and have been comforted from the words found within.

I truly hope I never see anyone wearing one of these hateful t-shirts.

If I ever have to encounter someone clothed in one of these shirts, hopefully it’s as they’re darting out infront of the my car.

Let me be clear: this is idiotic, and in poor taste.

But… the shirt does say 109:8, which alone is simply saying another leader would be preferred.

If they had meant 109:9, they probably would have put it on the shirt- which should get you cuffed and dragged off to a quiet place where you get your head tap-danced on.

So yes, it is tasteless and is a weird use of the bible. But based on the shirt alone, I don’t see anyone praying for his death. But the whole thing is colossally stupid, and rises to the level of tier 3 assclownery.

  3. @Lee B.: But 109:8 doesn’t stand on it’s own. The entire chapter is talking about one evil man. The evil man mentioned in 109:8 is the same evil man mentioned in 109:9.

I truly hope this is just a fringe thing that I never see in real life. I think that if I did, it would make me feel very sad.

@Rick: Agreed- 100%. I didn’t get the whole picture. Pretty friggin warped, and certainly not very Christian.

  5. Why the yellow? Are they praying for him to die of jaundice?

  6. @Jesse Jace: I don’t know. I saw the same verse along with the same message on all sorts of products, not just this yellow t-shirt.
