Problems with Ubuntu 9.04

Ever since “upgrading” to Ubuntu 9.04, my notebook computer has been acting slow.  Firefox will lock up and the screen will turn gray.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think someone came in when I wasn’t home and reinstalled Windows XP on it.  Things just seemed a lot quicker when I was running the prior version of Ubuntu.

I think the problem is connected to Flash.  I’ve been playing a lot of Bejeweled Blitz lately (that’s an understatement) on Facebook and it uses Flash. Maybe I should go a day or two without playing Bejeweled Blitz or watching videos and see if the problem goes away.

A whole day without Bejeweled Blitz? I might get withdrawals.

Hey Rick- are you dual (or triple) booting by any chance? May email you directly if you don’t mind if you are multi-booting.

  2. @Lee B.: No, I’ve only got Ubuntu on the laptop. I really think it’s flash. It probably wouldn’t hurt either to put more RAM in it. More RAM never hurts.

Okey doke- good luck tuning it up. I use everything- Vista, XP, Ubuntu, Macintosh, iPhone, Android, and now Win 7 as I need to be able to judge how they will behave with the wireless network I run at work, and to provide advanced support when the help-deskers come up short supporting wireless clients that are even more clueless than our helpdesk. Ubuntu has surprised me in it’s capabilities, I like it a lot. Actually, am more impressed by it than Macintosh- I just can’t buy in to the Apple culture and price point despite being a daily user. But the latest Ubuntu is causing me some minor frustration in another direction than you, with the boot loader menu stuff. Party on.

I’ve had the same issue with FireFox, except it started with the previous version of Ubuntu. I’ve settled for waiting for Chrome. I never liked Firefox that much anyways… :P

Flash definitely doesn’t help it, though. Flash on Linux is just awful.

Oh, and the issue I encounter has nothing to do with flash. Firefox just hangs for half a minute at a time a few times a day.

This is not just firefox. It happens to me with FF, PDF viewer, system monitor, most anything. I believe it has to do with maybe low memory, except I have 8GB, I don’t know, I think it is a resource thing as it will recover. I believe I also had it in 9.04, 8.10, and 9.10.

What will annoy me to no end is if this is a Ubuntu issue alone. After the debacle, that was upgrading to 9.10, I am pretty close to going to either another distro or Win7…or maybe Mac, because, from everything I’ve seen and heard, Mac’s “just work”.

  12. @Walt: This weekend I put Windows XP back on my laptop and I’m really happy with it. I’m not going to screw around with fake UNIX again unless I have to because of my job. If I do, it wont be Ubuntu. I’ll go with one of the other distributions.
