Emily the Rip Off

Posted on | December 1, 2008 | No Comments

I’ve never really understood the appeal of Emily the Strange.  I guess it’s a comic book about a little goth girl and her cats.  I know that it has lots and lots of licensed merchandise.  Wikipedia says that the character was created by a man named Rob Reger in 1991.

Emily the Strange is very similar to a character named Rosamond appearing in the book Nate the Great and the Lost List published in 1978.  Rosamond was created by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Marc Simon.

Emily and Rosamond both have long black hair.
Emily and Rosamond both have a very pale complexion.
Emily and Rosamond both have four (4) black cats.
Emily and Rosamond both wear white mary janes (shoes).
Emily and Rosamond both are referred to as “strange”.

I think the creator of Emily the Strange has got some explaining to do. I also think Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Marc Simon have some serious Hot Topic money coming their way.
