Sirius XM (or whatever they are calling themselves) rolled out their new channels today and I was disappointed to discover that they dropped the punk rock channel. I thought it was bad when they “temporarily” converted the channel over to a 24 hour AC/DC channel.
This really irritates me. Since my personal music collection is really quite limited when it comes to punk rock, I found myself listening to channel 29 quite a bit. I checked out the Sirius XM website and it said that if I like the punk rock channel, I should listen to The Fraction on channel 28. Really? This is what Sirius XM says about channel 28:
Where heelflips, handplants, half-pipes and hard rock join hip-hop and the biggest names in skateboarding, surfing, freestyle skiing and more. Faction is the music that defines the action sports lifestyle. Hear exclusive shows from Tony Hawk, Bam Margera and more.
What we play: System of a Down, Offspring, NOFX, Metallica, 50 Cent, Green Day, Beastie Boys, AFI, Korn, Snoop Dogg, My Chemical Romance and Sex Pistols.
I don’t want a channel that is dedicated to the action sports lifestyle. I don’t want to hear shows by Tony Hawk or Bam Margera. I don’t want to hear the music of 50 Cent, Metallica, or Snoop Dogg.
Instead of a music channel dedicated to punk rock, I get a channel dedicated to the skateboard dorks that you find hanging out at the mall food court.

/ November 12, 2008My son has high hopes of becoming one of those mall-food-court-skateboard dorks. Heh.
Though I like to think he’ll have better taste in music than that.

/ November 12, 2008@Rachel: Well, I’m certain of the fact that by simply having such positive influences in his life such as you and Donna, he wont end up hanging out in the food court in the middle of August wearing a black hoodie and a knit cap.
I’m just saddened that he won’t be able to one day grow up and listen to a satellite radio channel dedicated to nothing but classic and neo punk.
Rachel
/ November 13, 2008@Rick: Sadly, Rick, the chances that he’ll wear a black hoodie in August are pretty high, as that’s exactly what Donna does. Seriously.
But thank you. I appreciate your faith in my ability to raise a non-asshole. :)

/ November 18, 2008I am also not happy about the loss of our beloved punk channel. And no, the Faction channel doesn’t even compare. I’m not a kid either–I’m 38 and my boyfriend is 40, he’s also very disappointed. I’ve been checking around, and if there’s any channels you want to complain about losing, definitely give a call to Sirius Programming at (202) 380-2000. If there’s enough complaints about a certain channel that’s been mysteriously deleted, there’s a chance they’ll do something about it. I’ve called 6 times. And I’ll call 6 more.

/ November 18, 2008@Pinky: Yeah, I’m listening to Faction (channel 28) and they are playing SlipKnot. I kinda like SlipKnot and even have a couple of their albums, but they are not a punk band.
Before that, there was a promo for the Bam Margera show where he (I guess) sits around with the people he pays to be his friends and shoots the shit. Bam Margera is a punk, but that isn’t punk music.

/ November 18, 2008I think it’s a shame they discontinued the punk channel, even though those assholes played too much of the same shit. That was kind of annoying. I have been listening to punk and hardcore since the early 80’s and have seen many bands at the olympic, fenders and many other places. If they do come back with the punk channel they need to play more hardcore. GBH, English Dogs, The Freeze, Dr. Know, Gang Green, Necros, Big Boys, early DRI etc…

/ November 18, 2008I hate that new metal shit. Big demon/little demon screams, that shit suck balls. Follow lame ass formulas, unoriginal. SlipKnot should change their name to BalloonKnot.
