Racist Missouri Obama billboard angers some

Posted on | October 12, 2008 | 9 Comments

Outside West Plains, Missouri on U.S. 63 sits a sign so absurd and racist that it’s almost funny.  At least it doesn’t follow John McCain and Sarah Palin’s latest talking points claiming that Barack Obama has terrorists for friends.

The billboard attempts to capitalize on Obama’s middle name, Hussein.  It’s not like he picked that name for himself in 1992.  The name was given to him by his parents when he was born.  I can’t see the logic in attacking someone over their middle name.  If I did, I might have something to say about John McCain’s middle name, Sidney.

And the billboard is not even factually accurate. I wish Barack Obama did favor gay marriage. Unfortunately, he does not. Instead, he favors civil unions. As far as taxes go, he is only raising taxes on the top 5% of taxpayers. He wants to give the rest of us a tax cut.

I’m not even sure that it is Obama wearing that turban.  It looks more like Baba Booey from the Howard Stern show. [Link]

Why is his middle name in quotation marks? It’s not like “Hussein” is some wacky nickname he got while he was the key grip on Adventures in Babysitting. Racist signmakers need to proofread more carefully.

That sign would be pretty funny if one didn’t realize how racist and backward 3/4 of the Mid-West really is.

this crap is why Missouri will again go Republican. I am from Missouri and I will tell you there are more where this came from. The number of uneducated, uninformed people out there scares me. To think they have the power to vote.

I lived in West Plains for a while, and you have NO IDEA how backwards this town is. When I heard about the billboard, I was nowhere near surprised at all this crap came from there.

I was born and have lived in West Plains, Missouri my entire life. We are the show me state and we call them as we see them. This sign does not contain anything untrue. Senator Obama Supports everything the sign says and I do not see how it could be the least bit racist. No where on the sign does it say anything about race. And Hussein is his middle name.

David, if you honestly don’t see anything racist about that billboard, it’s probably because you are racist. Seriously, drawing a black man in a turban is racist no matter how you want to look at it, no matter what the man’s middle name is. Could somebody explain to me what is so horrible about his middle name, besides the obvious? Do people realize that Hussein is the Arab equivelent to the name Smith in our country and was not made up for Saddam? And no, everything on that billboard is not true, but one could hardly expect you, or any of the other racists in your little town, to look up facts before regurgitating them. And before you or anybody else wants to call me a crazy liberal, I’m voting for McCain. Even I admit that this is a disgusting billboard.

I disagree with the racist carictature of this comment. What is said is true and he does support gay civil unions. I am offended that you find this to be racist since it says nothing about racism. The turban is an accurate potrayal of the clothing Barak H. Obama wore during his visits to Islamic Kenyan relatives. Whay the racism against our region that has many ethnic visitors?

@Darrell K Whitfield: You know who else supports civil unions? McCain.

The caricature is racist because it looks nothing like Obama. It features big lips and a bulbous wide nose. The artist might as well put a bucket of chicken in one hand and a slice of watermelon in the the other.

And his middle name is Hussein. Big deal. My middle name is Lee. That doesn’t mean I am going to lead the army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania or try to succeed from the union.
