I think it’s over

With the results of Tuesday’s Indiana and North Carolina primaries tallied up, I think we finally have a clear winner for the Democratic nominee for President. It looks like Republican John McCain will be squaring off against Barack Obama.

If you are a Republican, I can’t help but think this is good news to you. It almost certainly assures another Republican President till at least 2012.

I simply don’t think Obama has a chance of beating McCain. I might be wrong. I’ve been wrong before and I most certainly will be wrong again. With that said, I just think comes with a lot of things the Republicans will jump on and capitalize to make him look as though he has no business in the White House.

Most of the time Republicans have to make stuff up about their opponents. They wont have to do that with Obama.

Andrew Sullivan wrote an interesting piece at his blog on the Republican reaction to Obama. It’s right here if you want to check it out.

They may not have to make stuff up about Obama, but they will have to (and have, and are eager to continue) distort, exaggerate, and simplify. That will work for a lot of folks, I’m sure, but I don’t think Obama vs. McCain is as much of a foregone conclusion as you do.

What exactly will they have to distort, exaggerate, or simplify? These are the same people that told enough lies about Kerry to make him look like he was a big pussy during Vietnam. The guy chased a Viet Cong rocket launcher crew into the jungle and killed them and they made him look like he was a coward. It’s a mistake to underestimate their powers.

I guess I’d feel better about it if Obama had more success with mainstream, traditional Democrats. I’m not talking about the people that have blogs, think milk comes from soy, or read Daily Kos six times a day. I’m talking about the type of Democrats that elected Reagan in the 80’s. I think a candidate like McCain will be quite appealing to them. And it doesn’t hurt that the likes of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh hate McCain. The fact that so many hardcore right wingers hate McCain only makes him more electable with mainstream, middle of the road Americans.

  3. I agree with you, Rick.

As fucked up as this sounds from me, I think I’d prefer McCain over Obama, if that was the choice. Christ, this doesn’t mean I have to start listening to talk radio and put a NRA sticker on my car, does it?

“Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!”

She isn’t dropping out just yet, so maybe there is an ever so slight chance that something will happen and the tables will turn again. I don’t know that I prefer McCain over Obama, but I don’t think Obama is a strong enough candidate to beat McCain.

  5. The Democrats must have taken a course in “How to fuck up an election.” Riding off of Bush’s coattails, even a trained pigeon could have won. They pretty much fucked it up. I’m voting third party on this one.

  6. Well, I always for for third input. Wait… was that what you meant?

Sometimes I wonder if the Democratic leadership really wants to win the general election. If they did, I’d think they’d want to place the candidate with the best chance at beating McCain in November on the ticket.

Let’s face it, the next President will have a tough job on his or her hands when they take office. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Democrats would rather have a Republican President to take the blame for the problems they will face. With a Democrat as President, the responsibilities of fixing Bush’s messes fall squarely on the shoulders of the Democrats. They will have the Senate, the House, and the White House.

    There will be no excuses.
