Magellan over at ExploreForTruth has posted that his local Wal-Mart is still selling the Nazi SS t-shirts. He also purchased one and took a pic, which demonstrates that the shirts haven’t been put on hold or frozen in Wal-Mart’s central inventory computer system. Something that would be very easy to do if they actually wanted to. He makes a good point on his blog:
I know they said it could take a couple days, but if this was E.coli laced spinach or acetaminophen, it would have been off the shelves in hours. Tomorrow I will be checking another Wal-Mart.
I would hope to believe that they would be a lot quicker to remove tainted products. Seeing how they have dropped the ball at getting rid of Nazi swag, it makes me wonder how proactive they would be when it comes to removing product that could actually kill you such as E.coli laced spinach.
My problem with Wal-Mart is that they refuse to sell products that they deem to be offensive. They will not sell CD’s to adults that contain adult language. They canceled orders for the best-selling satire book America (The Book) by Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show because it dared to show phony naked pics of Supreme Court justices. They also refuse to sell magazines such as Maxim because they show woman wearing sexy clothing.
They then turn around and sell t-shirts adorned with the very same symbol worn by Nazi SS concentration camp guards at Auschwitz.
Imagine a situation where a someone buys this shirt at Wal-Mart not knowing the significance of the Totenkopf or even that it is a Totenkopf. He then wears this shirt in public and the wrong person sees it. How is he supposed to know that the shirt he purchased at his friendly local Wal-Mart features a Nazi symbol?
I think like most people, he expects Wal-Mart to be more responsible. The reality is that Wal-Mart won’t sell Maxim magazine to adults, but it will sell Nazi swag to kids.

/ November 15, 2006Have you seen any mention of this in any major newspaper or news source? It seems like the only real talk about it is in the blogosphere. I just picked up one of the shirts last night at the Wal-Mart closest to me.

/ November 17, 2006I was still able to buy one and took some pictures of the case they are stored in.
I just bought one to bother Wal mart Corporate. If they lose money, maybe they will act.

/ November 18, 2006In regard to the Jon Stewart book, America, I know that the link (article) says Wal-Mart cancelled their orders for this book, but I do know that my local Wal-Mart sold it and I think it was on the shelves for a while (and actually, I was quite surprised they were selling the book in the first place).

/ February 15, 2007Marian, Hot Topic doesn’t sell this shirt. They sell stuff with skulls on it, but not the infamous Totenkopf skull.
Go figure.

/ February 28, 2008Translation fot “Totenkopf” is skull, literally meaning death’s head. The insignia worn by Nazi soldiers (and the British Army in the 1700’s, and Russians and Sweedish soliders, and Estonia and Italy, the list goes on) is a take on the skull and crossbones which is a popular logo among many people and kids with the Pirate movies and merchandise available today. There are many things in this day and age that have a deeper meaning that originated from sommething morally terrible. The knowledge of this has been bread out. Think about The Paganistic celebration in October, and the universe of Harry Potter. Magic: Is it against a Christian God, or just good family fun. This great country’s flag has red stripes that represent the blood that was shed, and we feel appropriate to reserve land for our “Native” American friends. Much music and medecine advances came from someone who was seen as evil or vain, for attempting something against a moral/relegious/humaine code of conduct. Ever listen to the lyrics coming through your radio frequency? I saw female “pimp” Halloween costumes for a teen at my local costume shop. French maid costume, do parents really want to turn their small girl into an old man’s eye candy for his domestic duties? I am not a facist empathizer, I buy my toiletries at W-mart because they are a better price than Target. I patron my local Farmer’s markets and still buy bananas from the tropics; thus usuing jet engine fuel and polluting the planet, but providing jobs for others.
Let us do our research and evaluate our souls. Do we care about the deeper meanings or has time, forgetfulness, and the fact that families eat in their car made us slip.
Thanks for keeping your eyes open, people.
